Backing Plates for Sputtering Targets
Sputtering is a core thin film deposition method in which argon ions are energized within a high voltage cathode anode region, creating a dense plasma. These ions bombard the sputtering target surface, ejecting atoms that deposit onto a substrate as a uniform thin film. The process generates significant heat at the target interface, especially for low-yield materials, high-power magnetron systems, or extended deposition runs.
Efficient heat management is essential. Without proper thermal conduction, localized overheating can cause target cracking, delamination, or instability in the deposition rate. Conductive metal targets dissipate heat effectively, while semi-conductive and insulating ceramics require a mechanically robust backing plate to ensure stable operation.
