ideal candidates for mid-IR optical applications
As Optical Materials - Chalcogenide glasses are a diverse class of materials composed primarily of chalcogen elements, including sulfur (S), selenium (Se), and tellurium (Te), along with network formers such as germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), and antimony (Sb). Discovered in the early 1950s, these materials are widely used in infrared (IR) optical systems and lens components for night vision and thermal imaging due to their exceptional transmission across short-wave infrared (SWIR), mid-wave infrared (MWIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectra. Compared to crystalline infrared materials, chalcogenide glasses offer superior athermalization and achromatization, low dispersion, low dn/dT, and insensitivity to thermal effects.
Unlike conventional single-crystal germanium, amorphous chalcogenide glasses can be precision-molded into aspherical and freeform optical elements, enabling advanced optical designs.
As Phase Change Materials - By adjusting their composition, chalcogenide glasses can also be engineered for specific thermal and optical properties, including ultrafast localized phase changes. Their unique phase-change properties have also enabled their use in non-volatile phase-change random-access memory (PCRAM). As demand grows for high-performance computing, big-data processing, and AI-driven technologies, chalcogenide-based PCRAM has become commercially significant. Ongoing research focuses on optimizing phase transition thresholds, minimizing resistance drift, and enhancing thermal stability for long-term reliability.
LTS specializes in the manufacturing of high-performance chalcogenide materials, engineered for both optical and phase-change applications. We offer precise compositional control, enabling custom formulations with up to five-element mixes, along with advanced surface finishing down to 1.2 µm.
